I love baking and making fun shaped cakes, but I don’t like spending the money on buying the shaped pans. Call me frugal, cheap or plain ol thrifty. I’d rather put the $12+ dollars into a piggy bank for a fun rainy day project.  I normally bake about 2 -3 times a month, cupcakes, brownies, cakes etc. and almost always bake a cake for the “special occasions”. Valentine’s Day was no different, and I found myself in the kitchen baking as early as 5:15 am and then again mid afternoon preparing my Heart Shaped Cake surprise.  Below I’ll show you how to make your own Heart Shaped Cake.

Super Easy Heart Shaped Cake – From 2 Circle Pans

Super Easy Heart Shaped Cake - From 2 Circle Pans

~Items needed ~

2 – 9 inch circle pans
wax paper or parchment paper
cake plate or just a regular plate
1 or 2 Cake Mixes ( I use Duncan Hines German Chocolate)
2 – Duncan Hines Frosting/Icing Tubs (or make your own favorite icing)
spatulas, butter knife, spoons (what ever you use for spreading your frosting
bread knife or a shredded edge knife for cutting the cake pieces.

~ Step 1 ~ Prepare pan, preheat oven and bake cakes.

Preheat your oven per cake mix direction, prepare cake as per directions on box. Prep the cake pans as per instructions on the cake mix box, pour batter into cake pans as even as possible.  Bake per instructions and let cool completely.

~ Step 2 ~ Line cake plate, cut cakes and prepare to frost

Super Easy Heart Shaped Cake - From 2 Circle PansLine your cake plate, or plate with wax paper or parchment paper. Using one of the cakes,  cut about a 1/2 inches off each side, making the circle the shape of a square. Set those pieces aside for later use.  Remove the square cake and place on your cake plate, so it looks like a diamond. For easier removing take a spatula and slip it gently under the cake to loosen it from pan. Using Super Easy Heart Shaped Cake - From 2 Circle Pansthe other cake you’re going to cut it in half directly down the center, then from center line cut  about 1/2 off each piece. Remove and set aside the pieces you just cut off. Remove the two remaining pieces and place on each side of diamond at the upper point. Don’t worry if they don’t fit perfectly together, the frosting will hide it.

~ Step 3 ~ Frosting and Decorating

Using the frosting of your choice, frost the cake making sure you spread the frosting little thick to seal the pieces Super Easy Heart Shaped Cake - From 2 Circle Panstogether. Using the pieces you set aside you can cut heart shapes from them. It’s easy because the pieces you cut have the curved edge already. I used the two larger pieces as a smaller heart in the center of my cake. I also took a few of the smaller pieces and crumbled them into some Super Easy Heart Shaped Cake - From 2 Circle Pansfrosting. Be creative.  After cutting your hearts place on top of your cake and frost them. Add any finishing touches and you’re done. You’ve just created a Heart Shaped Cake, that you’re loved ones will enjoy.

Super Easy Heart Shaped Cake - From 2 Circle PansSuper Easy Heart Shaped Cake – from 2 Circle Pans, can also be made using 1 circle pan and 1 square pan. This method will eliminate the step of cutting one circle into a square. But as I mentioned above, I like to use what I have and save the extra $$ for a rainy day.

Thanks for visiting
