Climbing the family tree
Have you ever thought about climbing the family tree and seeing where the long extended branches lead you?
I have often wanted to see how far and wide my family branches extended but never really took the time and effort to do the research.
It would probably take the help of several family members to gather the names, birth dates, locations etc.
Tracing where my great grandma’s parents came from and theirs etc. would be like watching a show on the History Channel.
Most of us never get the chance to meet our great grand parents, and some haven’t even met their grand parents. I am one of the few that didn’t get to meet my grand parents on my father’s side. I know my grandma on my mom’s side of the family, so tracing my family tree branches would be a nice way to get to know something about my family history.
I find it odd how at one point in our life things don’t seem so important then a year or so later, you find yourself needing to know/wanting to know things. I guess I am at a point in my life where I want to know the where’s/when’s etc.
Have you traced your family tree branches? If you haven’t yet is it something you’ve thought about doing?

I wrote about our heritage trip here Debbie.

Hello Deborah -
I was fortunate to have known both my grandmothers but they did in fact die when I was a young boy. I do have wonderful memories of them. I never knew either one of my grandfathers though. I come from a large family and the kids are well spread out. I am second youngest by only 13 months and my oldest sibling is my sister 15 years older than I am. Nice post.
Great post..you have given me something to think about.I think this is very important, not only for me,but for my daughter and the future generations. Thank u..
Raven, that's so true I think the more I have to start with the further I will get on my climb.
David the English Lord hmmm we'd get to call you Lord David then? Sorry to hear about the wall you hit on your search.
Sweepy, wow you are very lucky. I can imagine you sitting there listening to stories being told by them. Thank you, I am liking being back
Jimshu, yes you are right I have found a few that I will start with. That would be interesting planning a trip to go back and see some of my heritage. You'll have to share more with us
Mary, I will have to go and find that post I find all this tree climbing very interested and hearing other's stories help me feel like I can also do it and actually get somewhere
I would also like to complete a tree for my children. I remember growing up and looking through this huge family photo album and on the front cover was a family tree. But I was so young then didn't think much of it and now I am afraid that album is long gone lost in the many moves my parents did.
Thank you all for stopping by
I didn't do it personally, but my cousin traced back my mother's side of the family as far back as she could. She actually went over seas to accomplish her feat. I recently wrote a post on my mother utilizing some of the information she obtained. It is so interesting to me.
My husband and I hope to complete a family tree for our children. We have already started speaking to his side of the family for information that we can get from them. Then, we will probably go internet searching from there
Several online sites now are invaluable aids to researching family trees. We used our family tree to plan a visit to our heritage in Scotland last year. Lends a whole new dimension to travel.
It is always interesting to know where your roots belong – I know all about mine thankfully – you should definitely find out Deb..
I hope you decide to trace your family tree and would love to hear about what you discover.
Hi, Deb. I had the honor of know all four of my grandparents rather well, but none of my great grandparents. I've heard some stories of them but I'm not sure I will be able to get beyond that. Sometimes I do wish I knew more. Nice to "hear" your voice these days!
As we age we seem to grasp the importance of our origin and who exactly our relatives are. I started tracing mine many years ago, hit a rodblock and pretty much gave up..this was before the big explosion and everyone doing it. I would probably like to pay someone to do the research and discover the dirt… Hey I might be a English Lord
You are right Debbie, there comes a point when you are interested in knowing. If you loose a parent it gets harder to trace that information back. You want to get as much as you can while your parents are alive…they are the closest living link to your past…
Good information and something you want to start sooner than later…
